How to Measure for Drywall
Accurate measurements save you from costly mistakes. Follow these steps to calculate your drywall needs:
Measure Room Dimensions
Measure length, width, and height of the room. For walls, multiply perimeter by height. For ceiling, multiply length by width. Record in feet.
Subtract Openings
Measure doors (standard 3×7 ft = 21 sq ft) and windows (avg 3×5 ft = 15 sq ft). Subtract these from your total wall area to avoid over-ordering.
Choose Sheet Size
For 8 ft ceilings, use 4×8 ft sheets hung horizontally. For taller ceilings, use 4×9, 4×10, or 4×12 ft sheets to minimize horizontal seams.
Order Extra
Add 10-15% for waste. Also factor in extra sheets for closets, soffits, and bulkheads. It's better to have extra than to run out mid-project.

How to Calculate Drywall Sheets for a Room
Step 1: Calculate Total Wall Area
Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). Subtract door and window areas.
Step 2: Calculate Ceiling Area (if needed)
Step 3: Calculate Sheets Needed
Example: A 12×12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings:
Wall area = (12+12+12+12) × 8 = 384 sq ft. Ceiling area = 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft.
Total = 528 sq ft. Subtract 1 door (21 sq ft) and 2 windows (30 sq ft) = 477 sq ft.
4×8 sheets = 32 sq ft each. 477 ÷ 32 = 14.9 + 10% waste = 17 sheets
Material Estimate
Screws: 17 sheets × 30 screws = 510 screws (about 1 lb)
Mud: 17 sheets × 1.5 lbs = 26 lbs joint compound (1 bucket)
