How Many Bricks Do I Need?

Knowing exactly how many bricks you need for your project saves time, money, and prevents costly material shortages or waste. Whether you're building a garden wall, a house extension, a fireplace, or a patio, accurate brick estimation is the first step to a successful masonry project.

Our brick calculator works by calculating the total wall area, then dividing by the area each brick covers (including mortar joints). It automatically accounts for the specific brick size, mortar thickness, wall type (single or double wythe), and waste factor to give you the most accurate count possible.

Quick Reference: A standard modular brick covers about 6.875 ร— 2.375 inches with 3/8" mortar = ~6.75 bricks per sq ft (single wythe)
Pro Tip: Always order 5-10% extra bricks for cutting, breakage, and future repairs. Bricks from different batches can vary slightly in color.

How to Calculate Bricks for a Wall

Step 1: Calculate Wall Area

Formula: Wall Length ft ร— Wall Height ft = Wall Area (sq ft)

Step 2: Calculate Brick Face Area (with Mortar)

Formula: (Brick Length in + Mortar in) ร— (Brick Height in + Mortar in) รท 144 = Area per brick (sq ft)

Step 3: Calculate Bricks Needed

Formula: Wall Area (sq ft) รท Area per Brick (sq ft) = Number of Bricks

Example: A 10 ft ร— 8 ft wall (80 sq ft) using modular bricks (7.625" ร— 2.25") with 3/8" mortar:
Brick face area with mortar = (7.625 + 0.375) ร— (2.25 + 0.375) รท 144 = 8 ร— 2.625 รท 144 = 0.1458 sq ft
Bricks needed = 80 รท 0.1458 = 549 bricks + 5% waste = 576 bricks

Mortar Volume Estimate

Formula: Bricks ร— Brick Depth in ร— Mortar Joint Area (approx.)

For a single wythe wall, mortar volume is approximately 0.02-0.03 cubic feet per square foot of wall area, depending on joint thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks per square foot?
For standard modular bricks (7.625" ร— 2.25") with 3/8" mortar joints, you need approximately 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall. Queen bricks require about 5.65 per sq ft, and King bricks about 4.55 per sq ft. The exact number depends on brick size and mortar joint thickness.
How many bricks do I need for a 10x10 wall?
A 10 ft ร— 10 ft wall = 100 sq ft. Using modular bricks with 3/8" mortar: 100 ร— 6.75 = 675 bricks. Add 5% waste = 709 bricks total. For a double wythe (8-inch) wall, multiply by 2 = 1,418 bricks.
What is the difference between a brick and a tile calculator?
A tile calculator computes tiles needed for floors/walls based on surface area with grout gaps. A brick calculator computes bricks needed for walls based on wall volume, brick face dimensions, mortar joints, and wall thickness (wythe). Bricks are structural; tiles are primarily surface finishes.
What is a wythe in brick construction?
A wythe (pronounced "with") is a single vertical layer of bricks. A single wythe wall is 4 inches thick (one brick depth). A double wythe wall is 8 inches thick (two bricks side by side) and is used for load-bearing exterior walls, providing better structural strength and insulation.
How much mortar do I need per brick?
A standard modular brick with 3/8" mortar joints requires approximately 0.003 cubic feet of mortar per brick. For a 100 sq ft wall (about 675 bricks), you'll need roughly 2-2.5 cubic feet of mortar, which is about 4-5 bags of standard mortar mix.
How many bricks are on a pallet?
A standard pallet of modular bricks typically holds 500-525 bricks and weighs about 2,400-2,500 pounds (1.2 tons). Queen brick pallets usually hold about 400-450 bricks. Always check with your supplier as counts vary by manufacturer.
What's the standard mortar joint thickness for bricks?
The standard mortar joint thickness for bricks is 3/8 inch (10mm). Some applications use 1/4 inch for tighter joints or 1/2 inch for softer or more irregular bricks. The joint thickness affects both the structural strength and the total number of bricks needed.
How accurate is the brick calculator?
Our brick calculator is highly accurate when you enter correct dimensions. However, always add 5-10% waste for cutting, breakage, and future repairs. For complex walls with openings (windows, doors), measure each section separately and subtract openings from the total wall area.
