Brick Calculator
Free online wall square footage calculator for bricks. Enter your wall dimensions and brick size to get the exact number of bricks needed with mortar, waste factor, and cost estimates.
How Many Bricks Do I Need?
Knowing exactly how many bricks you need for your project saves time, money, and prevents costly material shortages or waste. Whether you're building a garden wall, a house extension, a fireplace, or a patio, accurate brick estimation is the first step to a successful masonry project.
Our brick calculator works by calculating the total wall area, then dividing by the area each brick covers (including mortar joints). It automatically accounts for the specific brick size, mortar thickness, wall type (single or double wythe), and waste factor to give you the most accurate count possible.
Standard Brick Sizes
| Brick Type | Length (in) | Height (in) | Depth (in) | Bricks per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modular | 7.625 | 2.25 | 3.625 | 6.75 |
| Queen | 7.625 | 2.75 | 3.625 | 5.65 |
| King | 9.625 | 2.75 | 2.75 | 4.55 |
| Engineer | 7.625 | 2.25 | 3.625 | 6.75 |
| Norman | 11.625 | 3.625 | 3.625 | 3.40 |
| Utility | 11.625 | 3.625 | 5.625 | 3.40 |
| Jumbo | 7.625 | 2.25 | 3.625 | 6.75 |
Bricks per sq ft calculated with 3/8" mortar joint, single wythe (face area only).
How to Calculate Bricks for a Wall
Step 1: Calculate Wall Area
Step 2: Calculate Brick Face Area (with Mortar)
Step 3: Calculate Bricks Needed
Example: A 10 ft ร 8 ft wall (80 sq ft) using modular bricks (7.625" ร 2.25") with 3/8" mortar:
Brick face area with mortar = (7.625 + 0.375) ร (2.25 + 0.375) รท 144 = 8 ร 2.625 รท 144 = 0.1458 sq ft
Bricks needed = 80 รท 0.1458 = 549 bricks + 5% waste = 576 bricks
Mortar Volume Estimate
For a single wythe wall, mortar volume is approximately 0.02-0.03 cubic feet per square foot of wall area, depending on joint thickness.
How to Find Square Footage of a Wall for Bricks
To find the square footage of a wall, measure its length and height in feet. Multiply them. A 10-foot wall that is 8 feet tall gives you 80 square feet. Then divide by the area each brick covers (including mortar). For modular bricks with 3/8 inch mortar, each brick covers about 0.146 square feet. So 80 รท 0.146 = 548 bricks. Add 5% for waste.
Use our wall square footage calculator above. Just enter your wall size and brick type. It handles single and double wythe walls, any brick size, and includes waste and cost automatically.
